How to Sneak Past The Gatekeepers
Don't Wait for Permission to Create
Happy Tuesday and Welcome back to… THE JAILBREAK.
(along with 650+ readers 🗝️ )
In a world where gatekeepers control access to platforms, audiences, and resources to succeed on the internet…
Permissionless creation is a revolution.
You can innovate, publish, and share your work without waiting for approval from traditional authorities (or even yourself). Here’s how you can unlock your creative potential and take back control.
1. Leverage Open Platforms
Open platforms like Medium, YouTube, and GitHub have democratized the distribution of content, software, and ideas.
Use these spaces to share your work, gather feedback, and build a community around your creations. The key is to start—your audience will grow with time and consistency.
Social media platforms are powerful tools for bypassing traditional gatekeepers. Create compelling content tailored to each platform's unique format and audience.
Engage with your followers, join relevant conversations, and send cold DMs to increase your visibility and make some new friends!
3. Self-Publishing
Gone are the days when publishing a book required an agent and a publishing deal. Platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing allow you to publish your work and reach a global audience.
Focus on creating value, and let readers discover your ideas on their own terms.
4. Crowdfunding and Pre-Sales
If your project needs funding, platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo offer a way to secure resources directly from your future audience.
This not only validates your idea but also builds a community of supporters invested in your success. Sell it, then build it.
5. Build in Public
Share your process, successes, and failures openly. This approach builds trust and relatability, attracting an audience that resonates with your journey.
Use blogs, social media, or live streams to document your progress and learn from the community. You can find mine here.
6. Collaborate and Network
Connect with like-minded creators and industry influencers. Networking platforms like LinkedIn and Twitter/X are great for this.
Collaboration can amplify your reach and introduce your work to diverse audiences and this is how I’ve hired my entire team!
7. Give Yourself Permission
Nobody is going to tell you to start a blog, a YouTube channel, or your own company.
If you have the desire to create inside of you then ignore all the reasons why you shouldn’t create and do it anyway.
With permissionless creation, you can bypass traditional gatekeepers to success on the internet and open up a world of possibilities for personal and professional growth.
Start where you are, use what you have, and create without asking for permission. The world is waiting to see what you have to offer.
Until next time,
